Design boss mourned

The automotive world is in shock after one of the most influential men in sports car design was killed in a road accident.

Andrea Pininfarina was the boss of the Italian coachbuilder founded by his grandfather, Battista Pinin Farina. It’s believed that his motorcycle was in a collision with a car in Trofarello, Italy, near the company’s home city of Turin.

He joined the family firm in 1983, and had been in charge since 2001. The styling house has developed a host of models for manufacturers as diverse as Ford, Volvo, British Leyland and Cadillac, but is best known for its work with Ferrari. It has created some of the Italian maker’s most famous models, such as the Daytona, Testarossa, 288 GTO and F40. All of Ferrari’s current range, including the new California coup-cabrio, is designed by Pininfarina.
