Is clever wind-up torch star turn?

Since the debut of the Freeplay portable radio in 1996, wind-up gadgets have become more and more common. This latest torch from Metro uses the technology to ensure you always have light, even if you don’t have batteries.

The LED beam offers multiple functions, while a seatbelt cutter and safety hammer are built into the body. We particularly liked the magnetic head, which allowed the torch to be attached to the bodywork and act as a safety beacon.

The maker claims one minute of winding provides 20 minutes of light from all five LEDs, and that proved to be the case in our test.

Unfortunately, the cheap plastic casing was a letdown and the size of the head means the torch may not fit in narrow car door pockets. But as a cost-effective emergency tool, it’s fine for the job.
