Perfect companion?

Taking your sat-nav with you at the end of your journey is usually a security necessity rather than a matter of choice. But HP reckons its new model is different. It says the iPAQ 314 Travel Companion works as well in your hand as it does in your car.

The 4.3-inch widescreen is ideal for navigating through the menus, although we found it hard to see in bright sunlight. And, using the navigation interface was confusing and difficult – even the postcode entry was troublesome, as the unit defaults to street names and house numbers. You can choose a 3D map, but it will automatically revert back to 2D and zoom right out if there are no imminent instructions, which is distracting.

However, it does let you select the mode of transport, and uses routes and average speeds to fine-tune the estimated arrival time. Its pre-loaded games are fun, while the video and music players show off the great sound quality, and a windscreen mount and leather case are included.

It’s a decent piece of kit, and although we wouldn’t be keen to use it, say, on a busy bus for fear of tempting opportunistic thieves, if you’re happy to do so it will keep you informed and entertained.
